Aim for every adult in the church to have an intentional part in the discipleship of the children.
This is Sunday Plus: A Children’s Ministry Vision, Brick Three – take a look at where this “vision brick” came from.
Years ago I was told of a study of adult siblings who had grown up in Christian homes. In each family one had walked away from the Lord while the other continued to walk with the Lord through adulthood.
The question was “Why?”
Researchers presumed they would find their answer within the family.
BUT! What they found was…
- the sibling who walked away from the Triune God never felt connected to the local church growing up and did not have a close relationship with any adult at church other than his Primary Disciplers.
- the sibling who walked with the Triune God into adulthood HAD close relationships with adults within the local body of Christ in addition to their primary disciplers.
A Primary Discipler is anyone responsible for the primary care of a child – physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and relational. A Primary Disciplers’ most important duty is to disciple the child(ren) the Triune God has placed in his/her care.
The sibling, in the study, who walked with the Triune God had a sense he belonged to the local church family not just because he was so-and-so’s child, but because he was known for who he was as an individual. He felt wanted, needed within the Family of God. That happened because he had trusting relationships with adults apart from mom and dad.

Disciplers and Specialists make it possible for a local Family of God to provide a ministry to children that meets each child’s individual needs.
