Apart from God we can do nothing (John 15:5). Only when an individual is properly related to God through faith is he able to live out the reality of The Beatitudes, which lay out eight challenges for one who walks with God. If fulfilled they bring God’s child joy and peace – not the giddy type of joy, but the soothing, all is well with my soul type of joy connected to peace. As God transforms the heart an individual’s behavior changes.
- Poor in Spirit – one who is totally aware of his need for God– apart from Him you are nothing.
- Mourn – not “Why me God?” It is a grief that comes from the depths, “Oh God I have hurt You and I have hurt others. Forgive me.” Repentance.
- Meek – when one moves from fear to trust in the worst of circumstances; when we recognize that God is in control we discover there is no need for vengeance, power, or to do things my There is a gentleness that overflows from the heart.
- Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness – desire to have a right relationship with God, who provides a heart that continually longs to be pleasing to God, just as we hunger for food.
- Merciful – blessings come from a merciful God; we deserve nothing, giving freedom to serve others with no expectation of reward – all is done for the glory of God, not self.
- Pure in Heart – an inwardly clean heart provided by God, moving us to continually acknowledge our sinful condition – only the blood of Jesus cleanses the heart. Ask each day for the Lord to reveal any wickedness (Psalm 139: 23 & 24).
- Peacemakers – through the introduction of Jesus to the lost, inner peace is spread which will then produce peace in relationships.
- Persecuted – as one walks with God he will be persecuted, 2 Timothy 3:12. Due to the rampant rebellion toward God, one who walks with God will be taunted, maybe even rejected by the world, John 15:18-25.
